Some stories begin with words.
Others begin with colour.
Before I know exactly what a story wants to say, I often feel its atmosphere first a shade of blue, a sudden warmth, a quiet violet, or a flash of colour that seems to carry an emotion of its own.
As a writer and illustrator, I have come to think of colour as another kind of language. It can suggest what a character cannot yet explain. It can hold memory, change the mood of a scene, or make something ordinary feel completely different.
Sometimes a colour leads me towards a character. Sometimes an image arrives before the words. And sometimes a story begins with nothing more than a feeling I cannot name yet.
That is one of the things I love most about creating: not everything has to arrive fully formed. A story can begin as a sketch, a memory, a question, a colour or simply a small idea asking to be noticed.
Perhaps that is the first whisper.
